The town of Cumming was originally inhabited by Cherokee people, who came to the area in 1755. The Cherokee and Creek people had disputes over hunting land, and after two years of fighting, the Cherokee won and took possession of the entire region.

After the battle, the Creek people moved south of the Chattahoochee River. Today, the area is known as Cumming and is located west of Hall County around the historic location of Vann's Crossing.

A history of racial intolerance plagued the area until the early 20th century. In 1912, a riot broke out after a Black man raped a white woman in Cumming. The riot quickly escalated, leading to the expulsion of almost all African American residents from the area.

While the racial cleansing didn't stop there, it did set the tone for a long history of racial tensions in Cumming. During the early 20th century, it was rumored that night riders would be sent into Cumming to kill any African American who lived there.

As a result, many Black families were forced to move out of the area or sell their homes for dirt cheap. Some stayed in the area, while others migrated to other parts of Georgia.
